Better Roofs Ordinance

San Francisco Better Roofs Ordinance

The Better Roofs Ordinance requires most new construction to install solar panels or living roofs on a percentage of their roof. The goal of this ordinance was to ensure the best use of valuable rooftop space in a dense, urban city. San Francisco is the first major U.S. city to introduce a mandate of its kind. This effort was led by Supervisor Scott Wiener. (2015 - 2017)

Context: I worked on the Living and Better Roofs program for the San Francisco Planning Department from its infancy. The Better Roofs Ordinance requires most new construction to install solar panels or living roofs on a percentage of their roof. The goal of these efforts is to ensure the best use of valuable rooftop space in a dense, urban city.

Role: I led the program; developed a webpage; conducted background research and site visits; managed interns; managed Living Roof Manual, led the Better Roofs Ordinance effort. (SF Planning)
